NAKITA'S STORY IN THE NETHERLANDS
I was waiting for a reply if I had been accepted on a Your Education exchange. I got home one day and as soon as I got into the house my phone rang and it was from Your Education. One of the ladies that works for Your Education said to me “I am glad to tell you that you have been accepted to go to Holland for an exchange.”
I was so happy and excited, but also nervous because I knew that I was going to Holland for a couple of months all by myself. Three weeks went by and we had an orientation meeting and I knew that my trip was coming up so fast because I only had four weeks to go till I flew out.
I was so nervous to go to the orientation meeting but as soon as I went in all my questions and worries were answered. As the weeks went by I was packing my bags and getting ready to drive up to Auckland. As I arrived at Auckland airport I could see the sadness in my Dad’s eyes, but at the same time he was also very proud of me because I was taking a huge step.
When I arrived in Amsterdam I was so nervous and scared, but when I saw my host family it was so amazing because they were so friendly. When we got to their house I set my room up. A couple days went by and it wasn't so good as I had a lot of homesickness because I'm one of those kids that hates being away from their parents too much, but I had a lot of support from my coordinator, my host parents and siblings. As soon as I started school my homesickness disappeared because I made so many new friends and had a lot of things to keep me busy.
When I only had one week left in Holland it started to get sad when I was at school because I knew I was leaving soon. I got invited to a party on my last weekend in the Netherlands and it was the best because I got to spend it with my best friends that I had made over the three months and also with my wonderful host family.
On my last day in Holland my friends in my class gave me some presents, which was a photo of us all together and some stroopwafels and some Dutch candy. It was going to be so heartbreaking saying goodbye to all these fantastic loving people. I left the school and biked home which was a 20-minute ride and the whole way home I was in tears because it was upsetting that I was leaving all my friends and family behind. It was heartbreaking saying goodbye to my host family as well but I told them “this is not a goodbye, it’s see you soon.”
I encourage everyone to do an exchange because you get some great things out of it.
Thanks for listening to my story.
