MEET OUR LOCAL AREA REPRESENTATIVES
Here are some of our dedicated and passionate Local Area Representatives supporting and supervising our many
exchange students here in New Zealand.
Lynne from Whangarei
Lynne enjoys being part of a worldwide family. She has placed and hosted many students from lots of different countries. She wants every student to have the best time of their lives while here in New Zealand. Lynne loves working with the amazing host families that makes this all possible.
When possible, Lynne likes taking students to visit sights around NZ and seeing how much they appreciate our beautiful country.
Lynne and her husband have travelled to many countries, visiting many of their students and meeting their families. This is very special as she gets to learn about other cultures first hand.
DEXTER from Hamilton
Hello, my name is Dexter and I have come on board with Your Education to help others with their High School Exchange Experience. I was an exchange student myself in Whangarei, New Zealand, during 2008 / 2009. My time in New Zealand was so amazing that I fell in love with the country and decided to come back to live my life here permanently.
After living and training in a number of different cities around New Zealand, I settled in Hamilton in 2014. Since then, I have had the pleasure of working at the Your Education Auckland Welcome Camp where I have got to meet many wonderful students and help them adjust to their first few important days in New Zealand.
Since I was an exchange student myself, I understand the challenges students may face. I am perfectly placed to help students and their host families work through any issues, such as homesickness, as I understand what it is like to be an exchange student far from home. I look forward to sharing my passion for New Zealand with many more students in the future.
ALYSON from WELLINGTON
Kia ora, my name is Alyson and I live in the wonderful Wellington region.
I have a passion for meeting people from around the world, which led my family into hosting over 20 years ago. We now have a large extended family around the world. Through hosting we have attended weddings and have host grandchildren around the world - it is the most rewarding experience, to enrich each others lives and to forge a bond that lasts a lifetime.
It certainly has had a positive impact on our lives, learning about each others cultures and languages but also it's about us having a positive influence in the students lives too. To our family it added a different dimension that nothing else can give, something that I wish more families could experience.
My advice to each student is to take every opportunity, and when they started dreaming in English, they had made it!!
I invite you to be welcomed into a Kiwi home and embrace the New Zealand way of life, taking home the most amazing memories. With beaches, ares, sporting venues, hills for biking and walking, nature reserves, we have so much to show you in the coolest little capital in the world. I can't wait to welcome more students to Wellington, New Zealand.
Coralene and Mark from Wanganui
We are Mark and Coralene and we have been a Local Area Representative and Host Family since 2004. We enjoy finding families for students, matching their interests, and giving them the chance to live in Whanganui for a year.
We love being able to show overseas students our wonderful lifestyle in NZ and also the experience of living so close to a beach - something that many landlocked countries miss out on. Bringing overseas students into my town gives Kiwi students the opportunity to meet other students from a different culture and hopefully broaden each other's horizons.
The children in a host family also benefit as they learn about another country and learn to compromise with another sibling in their home. My hope is that the bond will be strong enough that both the student and family will be part of each others life forever!
Karen from Horowhenua
Hello, my name is Karen and I am the Local Area representative in the Horowhenua!
I have been involved in Hosting for over five years now... I get great joy out of my role for "Your Education" as a Representative and a Host Parent.. Our family have hosted seven students from all parts of Europe.. One of our own children did an exchange and had the chance to reunite with her host brothers and other international students who had spent a year here in the Horowhenua from all over Europe! Hosting can be a very rewarding experience, sharing our New Zealand way of life and our beautiful country filled with wonderful keen friendly people will never be forgotten by a student and life long friendships and memories are made. It's highly likely you will get to meet your host students family at some stage, as they all become an important part of your family too. Five of my students families have said, "New Zealand is infectious and we will be back!".
We love to share our part of New Zealand with exchange students and giving them a memorable experience!
Leigh from Blenheim
Hello, my name is Leigh and I am the local area representative in Marlborough.
My family has been involved in hosting and supervising exchange students now for seven years and it has been truly a fun and rewarding experience. We have hosted students from all over Europe and also Japan. Hosting can be a very rewarding experience as you gain an insight into another culture and your own children can learn how small the World really is and how very alike we all are. It teaches acceptance of differences and cultural awareness. We have found that we have learnt so much, not only about other countries and cultures but also about ourselves and what is most important in our own lives.
Our own two daughters have been on exchanges to Austria and Germany and it has been a life changing experience for both of them. Our daughters now have siblings all around the World and I am sure the relationships will continue. We have visited some of our international children in Europe and it has been amazing to see them all grown up years later. When you host an exchange student, you gain a new family member who will be part of your lives forever! It is such a rewarding experience sharing our beautiful country and our culture with a young person from another part of the World.
Marlborough is a beautiful part of New Zealand, within an hour and a half of mountain lakes, ski fields, a short distance from beautiful forest walks and of course the stunning Marlborough Sounds with Wellington a quick trip away - a great place to host a young person from the other side of the World.
ELENA FROM BLENHEIM
Hello, my name is Elena. My family have been hosting students from Europe since 2014. I originally came from the Republic of Moldova and have lived and traveled in many countries before settling in New Zealand. Having travelled extensively, I firmly believes that the world is too small not to explore. From my personal experience I knows how rewarding it is having insight into other cultures and sharing your own. Hosting exchange students provides that for both the students and host families.
I have been an English as a Second Language Teacher and speaks 4 languages myself. Gaining an understanding of other languages gives a unique perspective and edge in the world. An exchange programme provides an opportunity to practice and become proficient in a foreign language for the students and host families as well.
Living in a new country far away from the family poses certain challenges for exchange students such as home sickness and cultural differences. Utilising my experience as an expatriate in Finland, Russia and Taiwan, I can help students handle these challenges with ease.
GLENDA FROM GORE
Hello, my name is Glenda. Along with my husband and family, I have hosted numerous International exchange students since 2004. As a family, we have enjoyed including our students in our family life and showing them all that New Zealand offers at school, in sport and activities, and in nature and landscape.
I am excited to be part of the Your Education team and enjoy working with students to ensure they take up all the opportunities that they can during their exchange and that families have a positive hosting experience. I am passionate about the wonderful experience being a host student and hosting a student can be.
Val from Invercargill
My interest in international high school exchanges started in 2005 and has now become part of my life: I love it.
My husband and I have hosted over forty students and each student adds a new dimension to the wonderful work of cultural exchange.
As a person who never enjoyed flying, I have thoroughly enjoyed the various nationalities that Your Education brings to New Zealand, and also giving New Zealand students the opportunity to visit the many countries abroad. I am happy that I can be part of this unique experience for students.
I enjoy working with Your Education as it allows me the chance to promote these wonderful opportunities. I am looking forward to meeting many more students in the future.
