LAR STORIES

"I have been an LAR based in Te Awa Kairangi (Lower Hutt), for the last 2 years. I have also had the privilege of supporting Students and Host Families in Te Upoko o te Ika a Māui, Wellington, and Te Whanga-nui-a-Tara, the Kapiti coast.I became an LAR due to my own experience as an exchange student and being aware of the challenges, growth and connections that come from being an exchange student.

I love sharing culture and seeing life long relationships flourish from exchange. I hope my role supporting Students and their host families can take out some of the guesswork, minimise challenges that arise, and celebrate the wins, to allow students and host families to focus on building connections and cherished memories."

"I have been lucky enough to be a LAR for just over 1 year, getting involved following hosting our own French student which we thoroughly enjoyed.

I enjoy my role as LAR because I provide students an opportunity to soak up the great outdoors of Fiordland and the wonderful community that we have here, as well as supporting and bringing students and host families together. I believe that being exposed to different cultures is good for students, families and our community, even my own family to be culturally aware of how different people live.

Our students are so courageous and brave and they teach me so much about resilience and personal growth being outside their home comforts."

"I have worked with youth all my life and whilst I have never traveled abroad as a young person. I have always felt it is important that students who are away from the comforts and routines of their own life, have good nurturing support. So when Your Education said they were needing an LAR for Kapiti, I met with the team and started looking for host families like me who enjoy filling their home with joy and laughter aswell.

As an LAR I have hosted students myself, taken the students I am supervising on outings and get to hear the highlights of their exchange every month. I love problem solving and offering solutions when asked for help, so this role suits my personality.

I am visiting 3 students this NZ winter in Europe and look forward to reconnecting with them and meeting their families. It is a privilege to be part of ensuring someone else's precious child has a full and enriching time in NZ. The management team are fun and dedicated and we have a lot of support for us in our work from them and other LAR's which makes the role very fulfilling

"When Kurt decided to start his own company, he asked me if I would join, so I feel very privileged to have been involved from the very start (10 years now). Stuart (my husband) and I started hosting students with Your Education, and around I also became a Local Area Representative with them.

I don’t enjoy flying that much so to place students from different counties and cultures, with special host families means so much. The students arrive here as teenagers and leave as young adults, and to help guide them in NZ is very special.

It is a privilege to be part of this amazing NZ owned company, and work alongside so many wonderful people."
